More things than are dreamt of in your biology: Information-processing in biologically inspired robots
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper is concerned with some methodological and philosophical problems related both to the long-term objective of building human-like robots (like those ‘in the movies’) and shortand medium-term objectives of building robots with capabilities of more or less intelligent animals. In particular, we claim that organisms are informationprocessing machines, and thus information-processing concepts will be essential for designing biologically-inspired robots. However identifying relevant concepts is non-trivial since what an information processor is doing cannot in general be determined by using the standard observational techniques of the physical sciences. Having a general framework for describing and comparing agent architectures may help.

Young Children's Understanding of Animacy and Entertainment Robots
Complex interactions, biologically-inspired features and intelligence are increasingly seen in entertainment robots. Do these features affect how children interpret the robots? Children have “animistic intuitions” that they use to attribute intelligence, biology, and agency to living things. Two studies explore whether young children also apply animistic intuitions to robotic animals, and wheth...
متن کاملSelf-organization, embodiment, and biologically inspired robotics.
Robotics researchers increasingly agree that ideas from biology and self-organization can strongly benefit the design of autonomous robots. Biological organisms have evolved to perform and survive in a world characterized by rapid changes, high uncertainty, indefinite richness, and limited availability of information. Industrial robots, in contrast, operate in highly controlled environments wit...

A highly desirable feature for next generation robots operating on terrestrial or extraterrestrial environment (Chien et al., 2006) is that they possess the property of sustainable autonomic systems enveloping the self-management and self-x characteristics such: self-reconfiguration, self-optimization, and self-healing. Responses taken automatically by a system without real-time human intervent...

متن کاملBiologically Inspired Intelligent Robotics
Humans throughout history have always sought to mimic the appearance, mobility, functionality, intelligent operation, and thinking process of biological creatures. This field of biologically inspired technology, having the moniker biomimetics, has evolved from making static copies of human and animals in the form of statues to the emergence of robots that operate with realistic behavior. Imagin...
